Volunteer at Lion Conservancy Project. Our Lion Conservation Project includes studying these lions in hopes of discovering what makes them vulnerable to extinction in an unprotected area and how practical measures can be developed to encourage coexistence between people, livestock and predators. LocationOn the Lion Project in Rombo, Eselenkei, Mbirikani and Olgulului you will accompany our Research Team and Maasai Guide, either by foot or in a vehicle on data collecting surveys of all animal species within set transects and blocks within the region. HighlightsStudents also participate in conservation projects such as recycling, clean-up projects, and tree-planting programs. Amazingly, most local school children have never been into a conservation area and have never seen a lion or an elephant! Students and teachers participate in hands-on field trips in field sites on a variety of topics designed with partners and teachers to complement and extend classroom studies. Community volunteers provide assistance, help students actively question, observe, and explore the natural world and participate in service learning projects to enhance wildlife habitat. Outdoor activities complement and extend what students are learning in the classroom. The Project BackgroundThe aims of this project are to monitor the predator/prey relationships of the animal populations, and gain understanding of human / wildlife conflict and the effect it is having on the lion population. The lions in this region have been persecuted over the years and sightings are very rare; you may not actually see a lion, but will be active in recovering fresh scat and making casts of prints for our continuing data collection. Field ConditionsAccommodation is under canvas, in a true bush camp, surrounded by the wildlife that lives there. The project supports the local community and you will have the opportunity to join in with the local schools, church, and visit the town of Loitokitok. |
