Large numbers of wildlife come to drink at the waterholes, so Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge provides a rare opportunity to view animals at close proximity in their natural habitat. The lobby, restaurant and terraced bar all provide excellent views and photographic opportunities, while an underground tunnel and bunker with ground level windows provides unbelievably close yet safe access to a variety of wildlife as they drink. The waterholes are illuminated by powerful floodlights as it gets dark, to make sure that you witness all the activity throughout the night. The Sanctuary is a success story in sustainable conservation where wildlife - including elephant, lion, buffalo and giraffe - thrive. Game drives are tightly controlled to ensure that animals are not harassed and some areas are completely closed to vehicles. This commitment to responsible ecotourism, which has been so well supported by visitors, ensures that the Sanctuary and all its wildlife will continue to prosper. Shompole Conservancy Shompole Eco-Lodge (HB).Day 4 &5. Transfer to the airstrip after breakfast for a flight to Nairobi. Upon arrival you will be met by a driver guide. Drive to Shompole conservancy via Lake Magadi to arrive in time for lunch. Shompole is a Conservancy which has been set aside for the wildlife by banning cattle and people from freely roaming and using the area. With a rich biodiversity, the conservancy has in abundance amongst many other animals, lion, buffalo, wild dog, elephant, golden jackal and honey badgers. The land within the conservancy varies from arid salt savannah plains to lush swamp and riverine forest. The plains are ideal for exploring on walking safaris, and activities offered elsewhere in the area include game drives, night drives, river tubing and excursions to Lake Natron. Each tented room provides a very spacious, shady oasis in this arid environment. Designed to harness the colours and textures of the surrounding natural landscape, each room combines a variety of white quartz stone, pale thatch, polished fig-wood and smooth white walls that give it both a unique contemporary style and a touch of the African bush. With privacy, comfort and relaxation in mind, each room has its own informal sitting areas, a bathroom with a view and a specially designed canvas and netting tent that includes vast windows and a high-canopied roof.
