9 Days Usambara Mountains “The Galapagos of Africa”

Dramatic and lush landscapes dominate the Usambara Mountains, providing a refreshing break from long road safaris. The West Usambaras are more geared up for tourism with several very comfortable hotels and lodges, and many hiking options. The East Usambaras are slightly less accessible and contain a greater area of pristine ancient Eastern Arc forest.

Into Lushoto Lawns Hotel (FB)

Day 1: In the morning at 0730hrs depart from Arusha or Moshi or from Dar to Lushoto West Usambara where you will arrive in the early afternoon for lunch. Afternoon walk or drive to Irente viewpoint and Irente Farm. The farmers produce many types of fruits, which are sold in Arusha, Dar, Moshi and Morogoro. Meals and overnight in Lawns hotel.

Lushoto - Magamba forest - 6-7hrs Magamba Guest House (FB)

Day 2: Breakfast followed by walking to the Magamba rainforest, visit an old stranch dug by the German during World War 1, the guide will provide an explanation of German and British Colonial history. proceed on walking thru the rainforest of Magamba to the village of Lukozi for dinner and overnight in guest house .

Magamba - Usambara villages - 5-6hrs Rangwi Catholic Rest House (FB)

Day 3: Breakfast, then walk along valleys and sloping hillsides of the inner Usambara Mountain passing by the vegetable farms lined with eucalyptus and banana trees. You will pass thru the villages of Malindi, Makose and Kagulio, proceed to Rangwi Catholic mission for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: After breakfast walk to Mamboleo or Tema villages, these villages are well known for their soil conservation and traditional irrigation project which concentrate on the development of stone and bench terraces to improve farming, thorough explanation by your guide on how the people of Shambaa tribe living in the area do keep their surrounding environment. Dinner and overnight at Mamboleo village camp.

Usambara Mtae Mtae Guest House (FB)

Day 5: After breakfast, proceed on walking to Mtae and there after you will climb Shegayu peak 2,220 m, where on clear days you will be able to see Mt. Kilimanjaro and Taita hills across the border to Kenya. You will have lunch enroute, dinner and overnight at Mtae.

Mtae – Lushoto- Amani Nature Reserve Emau Hill Forest Camp (FB)

Day 6: Wake up at 0600hrs for early morning breakfast, after breakfast check out from Mtae and yet in the private vehicles for Lushoto where you will arrive in time for lunch. After lunch drive to Amani Nature Reserve.

Day 7 &8: Amani Nature Reserve is located in East Usambara. One of the smallest and lowest ranges in the Eastern Arc, the East Usambaras are one of the most important in ecological terms, supporting some of the most extensive and least degraded montane forest in Tanzania.

Along with other similar forests in the country, the East Usambaras are cited as a Biodiversity Hotspot. Amani Nature Reserve is located within this range, protecting 10,000ha of reletively undisturbed forest. Contained within the reserve are many endemic species including the Usambaran Three-horned Chameleon and the famous African Violet (Saintpaulia).

The Visitor's Centre is a short walk from the Sigi Guesthouse and contains details of the flora and fauna of the Usambara Mountains. There are seed samples and photographs of the more important species, and the centre also contains a section dedicated to local culture and crafts. In addition to the traditional methods there are examples of "green" technology for example fuel efficient stoves.
